There are more people across the globe who have been displaced from their homes due to armed conflicts, war, criminal gangs, persecution, ongoing genocide, and human rights violations than ever before. The UN Refugee Agency estimates there are at least 42.5 million people classified as refugees and over 117 million people who have been dispaced from their homes. Providing health care for people who are in refugee camps presents unique challenges.

Gaza floods: UN claims 800,000 Palestinians affected as heavy rains floods Gaza tent camps, December 13, 2025. ITV News, Heavy rains and cold weather across Gaza have left tent camps flooded, worsening the already critical humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The United Nations said 800,000 Palestinians were affected by the flooding, which occurred after Storm Byron hit the territory. The overwhelming majority of Gazans live in tents and temporary shelters after two years of war. Despite a two-month ceasefire still holding, the rains bring their own deadly challenges. In Khan Younis, one family lost their 8-month-old baby to hypothermia, caused by the severe cold, according to her parents and Gaza’s Health Ministry. Her parents said their tent was flooded overnight, and when they awoke, she was freezing and shivering.

Heavy rain has flooded makeshift tents causing some of them to collapse. Many in southern Gaza say their belongings, including their bedding, are completely soaked, after days of rain. Cold temperatures are worsening the already dire living conditions across the Strip. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud is in Gaza City with more on how the harsh weather is posing serious health risks.
